TL;DR FORMULA & INDUSTRIAL SPEC BENCHMARK
AC100: 2.5 Base : 1.0 Liquid pbw | SG = 1.75 g/cm³ | Max Pigment ≤ 2%

Jesmonite AC100 requires a strict 2.5 : 1 Base-to-Liquid ratio by weight (71.4% Powder Base, 28.6% Acrylic Liquid) with a wet specific gravity of 1.75 g/cm³. Jesmonite AC730 requires a 5 : 1 weight ratio (83.3% Base, 16.7% Liquid, SG = 1.85). Liquid pigment must never exceed 2% of total mix weight (20g per 1kg) or the cast will remain chalky and weak.

Provenance & Tolerance Notice: Always weigh components on a digital gram scale. Adding excess liquid to improve flow reduces compressive strength by up to 40%. Use high-shear mixing blades.

§1

The 2.5:1 Weight Ratio Physics of Jesmonite AC100

Jesmonite AC100 is an acrylic-modified gypsum composite. The chemical hydration reaction requires 2.5 parts reactive powder base (hemihydrate gypsum with setting catalysts) to 1.0 part pure acrylic polymer emulsion by weight. For every 1,000g of total mixed wet slurry, you need exactly 714g of Base Powder and 286g of Liquid. With a wet specific gravity of 1.75 g/cm³, 1,000g of wet mix fills 571 mL of mold cavity (or 1.75g per 1 mL of volume).

§2

The 2% Pigment Failure Limit

Jesmonite aqueous pigments are highly concentrated organic dispersions. Adding too much pigment interferes with the crystalline cross-linking between gypsum micro-crystals and the acrylic polymer lattice. Maximum allowable pigment is 20 grams per 1,000 grams of total mix (2.0% by weight). Exceeding 2% causes severe surface chalking, unbonded pigment bleeding, delayed cure, and friable edges that chip under thumbnail pressure.

§3

High-Shear Mixing Blades and Pinhole Mitigation

Jesmonite powder must be added progressively to the liquid under agitation using a high-shear blade attached to a workshop drill at 1,500–2,000 RPM. Hand stirring with a tongue depressor fails to wet out micro-agglomerates, resulting in dry white powder lumps inside the cured cast. After mixing for 60–90 seconds until silky smooth, tap the mold firmly or brush a thin coat of slurry into fine mold details with a stiff bristle brush to pop trapped surface air bubbles.

Frequently Asked Engineering Questions

High-intent technical fabrication inquiries verified against lab standards.

Q1What is the exact mixing ratio for Jesmonite AC100 by weight?
The ratio is strictly 2.5 parts Base powder to 1.0 part Liquid acrylic by weight (71.4% Base, 28.6% Liquid). For 350g total mix: 250g Base + 100g Liquid.
Q2Can you measure Jesmonite liquid and powder by volume instead of weight?
No. Jesmonite Base powder contains varying air entrainment and settles over time, making volumetric cup measurement wildly inaccurate. You must use a digital gram scale.
Q3How much pigment can you safely add to Jesmonite without weakening the cast?
Maximum allowable pigment is 2% of total batch weight (20 grams of pigment per 1 kilogram of total mix). Exceeding this creates weak, powdery, chalky casts.
Q4How long do you have to pour Jesmonite AC100 before it sets?
Working pot life is approximately 12 to 15 minutes at standard room temperature (20°C / 68°F). Demold time is typically 2 hours, reaching full structural cure in 24 hours.
